Mark and Beth Bernstein

On the night of January 2, 2018, Blaze Bernstein left his parents' house to meet an acquaintance, former high school classmate Samuel Woodward, in Borrego Park, California. Tragically, this was the last time Blaze's parents would see him. After Blaze failed to show up for a dentist appointment the next day and wasn't answering his phone, his parents discovered that he had sent his home address to Woodward the night before. With the help of family and friends, they logged into Blaze's Snapchat account and contacted Woodward, who initially denied knowing Blaze. However, the Bernsteins recorded the phone conversation and shared it with the police.
After a challenging and frustrating investigation, detectives found Blaze's body in Borrego Park. His face was uncovered due to the rain, which had washed away the dirt and wet earth that had hidden him. Authorities charged Woodward with the murder, declaring it a hate crime. In 2024, six years after Blaze's murder, Woodward was found guilty and sentenced to life in prison without parole.
